Edouard Leon Cortes

Catalogue Raisonné for the complete works of Edouard Leon Cortès (French 1882–1969)

Thank you for visiting the Virtual Catalogue Raisonné for the complete works Edouard Leon Cortès (French 1882-1969). This catalogue raisonné is a comprehensive, annotated listing of all the known artworks by Edouard Leon Cortès in all mediums (oil, watercolor, etc.) The works that meet the Cortès catalogue raisonné committee's criteria will be included and described in such a way that they will be searchable and reliably identified by third parties. Works that do not meet the criteria will be stored for future reference but not included in the Cortès catalogue raisonné.

After 45 years of research, scholarship and dealing with the works of Edouard Leon Cortès and witnessing the confusion over authenticity, I decided that rather than publishing a multi-volume catalogue, we would address the authenticity issues surrounding works by Edouard Leon Cortes by creating a virtual catalogue raisonné for the artist's body of work.

We recognize and respect the opinion, accept letters of authenticity (providing the works meet the authenticity criteria) issued by Nicole Verdier and included in Edouard Cortès Catalogue Raisonne of Artworks Vol. I, II, III. To address the numerous nuances (support, signature, palette, style, period, etc.) works by Edouard Cortès must be viewed in person, which involves sending works internationally to Paris.

We also respect the opinion and letters of authenticity (provided these works meet authenticity criteria) issued by David Klein, Edouard Cortès, Le Poète Parisien de la Peinture. Mr. Klein currently lives in Israel. To address the international shipping issues, Mr. Klein and Ms. Verdier now offer authenticity using images provided via email, which we feel is an inadequate process considering the fact that Edouard Cortès was a prolific painter with diverse subject matter (landscapes, marines, still life, portraits, etc.) executed in oil, pastel, watercolor, gouache and mixed medium. Cortes’ street scenes are also repetitive, which makes verification in a published catalogue using thumbnail images difficult.

The virtual catalogue raisonné enables museums, auction houses, collectors and owners of works by the Edouard Leon Cortès to submit their painting(s) to be included in the Cortes Catalogue Raisonné, which is searchable by Title (description), Provenance, Medium, Subject, Size, Inventory Number, Auction House, letter of authenticity (Klein or Verdier) and Date of Work.

To maintain the virtual catalogue raisonne, there is a nominal fee to summit an individual painting for an opinion and to be included is $350.00. Shipping artwork to Dallas and the return will be the responsibility of the owner.
